CCTV to cover Mauritius

Various issues were raised during the parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, including the need to tighten security measures through the extension of the CCTV surveillance systems across the island.

Answering a question from MP Mahen Seeruttun, the Prime Minister said the police intend to extend the CCTV surveillance systems to other regions of the island, while giving priority to areas that are crime prone as well as regions with heavy traffic congestion and tourist areas.

The police have already worked out a list of priority areas for the extension of the CCTV surveillance system. “This will be implemented gradually upon availability of funds,” Dr Ramgoolam said.

Select Committee on live broadcast of proceedings

Answering a question from MMM MP Rajesh Bhagwan in regard to the proposed introduction of a motion for the setting up of the Select Committee that will look into the live broadcast of the proceedings of the House on radio and television,the PM Dr Navin Ramgoolam explained that the introduction of live telecast raises many complex issues which will have to be addressed beforehand.

Clear rules of coverage will have to be established, not only to ensure a fair and balanced telecast, but, above all, to preserve the dignity of the House as a working body, rather than a place of entertainment.

“The Select Committee can surely draw from international experience in this regard,” said the PM.

14 police officers retired from sevice since April 2010

In reply to a question from MP Alan Ganoo regarding the number of officers in the grade of chief inspector and above who have retired from the police force, the Prime Minister said that from April, 2008 to March 25, one police commissioner, three deputy police commissioners and 10 chief inspectors have retired after fulfilling their length of pensionable service of at least 25 years.

Larceny cases reported in Flic en Flac

In reply to a question from MP Josique Radegonde, Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam said that from May, 2009 to March 25, 16 cases of larceny have been reported in Flic en Flac regions which are not covered by the CCTV.

The PM said that the police are taking additional measures to reinforce their presence.
