Latest figures published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicate that the resident population of Mauritius was estimated at 1,283,415 as at December 31, 2010, growing at a rate of 0.4% since end-2009.
The population density for the Republic of Mauritius increased from 626 in 2009 to 629 in 2010. Female population was 650,628 compared to a male population of 632,787.
In 2010, people aged below 14 years made up 21.6% of the total population. Those aged 15-64 years represented 71.1% and people aged 65 and above made up 7.3%.
The dependency ratio (the child population under 15 years of age and the elderly population aged 15-64 years and that aged 65 years and over ) was 406 per 1,000, which is on a decreasing trend from 412 in 2009.
The number of live births registered during 2010 was 15,005, a decrease of 2.2% compared to 2009. The number of deaths in 2010 was 9,113, that is one percent lower than for 2009.
Infant deaths decreased by 8.8%, from 205 in 2009 to 187 in 2010, and still births decreased by 25.4%, from 138 in 2009 to 103 in 2010. The number of marriages was 10,555 in 2010 compared to 10,619 in 2009.
