China Town will be beneficial for the Port Louis

"We are willing to give a new look to China Town.."

The Municipal Council of Port Louis is in favour of the China Town project as it will be beneficial for the residents of the capital. “It is not a problem but some persons are trying to destabilise the city of Port Louis,” declared the acting lord mayor, Paul Audie Travailleur.

“Some people are stating that the municipal council does not agree with this project but this is completely false. We are willing to give a new look to China Town that represents the heritage of the community,” he added.

The acting lord mayor explained that the municipality has decided to reconstruct all the pavements in the area. To do so, it has become necessary to temporarily relocate the street vendors on a plot of land of 54 toises.

However, last year discussions took place among some stakeholders to offer this land to the Chinese community for the construction of a social centre. But nothing has been formalised.

“The dossier is being studied but it has not yet been approved by the council,” said Travailleur. He added that the municipality welcomes the project of a social centre in the region. “It will be a win-win situation,” he said.
