Adhering to an eco-friendly approach, the Trou aux Biches Resort and Spa has started several green projects.
This is also in line with the government’s vision of making Mauritius an eco-friendly destination.
The hotel, which is part of the Beachcomber group, has in the past implemented solar energy and advanced technologies for energy saving, a system for sorting and processing waste to make compost, sewage treatment, enhancement of wetlands and a green belt planted with endemic plants.
Trou aux Biches Resort and Spa is now installing a seawater desalination plant.
Mathieu Rivet, maintenance engineer of Beachcomber Hotels said that the desalination plant should be ready by the end of October provided they get their license from the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
They have submitted an application to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development for the same.
He stated that since 2010, the Trou aux Biches Resort and Spa has undergone renovations.
The aim of installing a desalination plant is to not further burden the distribution network of the Central Water Authority (CWA).
“Before the renovation work, the resort had an average water consumption of 300 m3 per day. Now, the estimated average consumption is 600 m3 per day,” said Rivet.
He added, “Hence, the CWA will have to supply 300 m3 more water daily. With the drought situation on the island, it would be rather difficult for the CWA to fulfill this demand. The desalination plant will allow us to reduce our consumption of water supplied by CWA”.
The plant will provide 450 m3 of water per day.
The total investment of the desalination plant, including civil and hydraulic works, is estimated to be Rs 31 million
