The police seized six containers of rosewood at the port last month. These will be repatriated to Madagascar in the coming weeks. The cargo that passed through the island was to be illegally shipped to China but was blocked by the police at the port.
The logs of rosewood are currently detained at the port. This has prompted the Malagasy authorities to investigate this issue.
They have opened discussions with their counterparts in Mauritius to repatriate the rosewood that is considered endemic to Madagascar.
Malagasy police officers have already made several arrests in connection with the case, including an IT officer, a Malagasy customs officer and a Chinese national.
Although there is no legal agreement between Mauritius and Madagascar, discussions should lead to a consensus soon.
