Employment Increases In Services But Also Fell Sharply

The service sector is recruiting more, while production and manufacturing declines sharply. The numbers have fallen on Tuesday 25 September.

The tertiary sector, which includes, among others, financial services, real estate, administration, commerce and transport, in 2012, 1,687 employees over the previous year. Is 195 473 in total.

The primary (production) and secondary (manufacturing) show, on the other hand, a marked decline. Statistics Mauritius published on Tuesday 25 September, figures on employment and wages.

In contrast, the primary sector (agriculture and fishing) has 702 fewer employees while the secondary sector (manufacturing and the construction amongst others) has lost 855. Note that the combined reduction of the number of employees in these two sectors is 1557.

It is in the field of textile notes that the most drastic fall in terms of number of employees, 1421. After the manufacturing and agriculture, forestry and fishing, with 746 fewer jobs and 552 respectively.

In contrast, the field of scientific and technical activities had the strongest growth with 734 and more employees in 2012 than in 2011. Then follows the trade, combining wholesale and retail, 540 more in 2012 compared to 2011.
