New Infrastructure for Transshipment to Airport
The project to build a "New Cargo Zone" and a "New Freeport Zone" to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Plaisance, seems to be back on track.

Airports of Mauritius (AML) Co Ltd has, in fact, put out a tender for the recruitment of a consultant to, among others, to conduct a geotechnical study and perform surveying work. The site is identified with an area of 710,000 square meters.

The objective is to develop modern infrastructure and better equipped transhipment seen constant growth in global air cargo market. If in 2009, 45,000 metric tons of freight were carried in Plaisance, projections indicate that by 2015 this figure will reach bar 62 000 metric tons, an increase of 37%. The upward trend will continue over the years according to studies of AML.

Whence the various steps taken since the beginning of the year to move the project forward in the right direction. Nevertheless, the previous attempt to identify a "Master Developer" had no results. In fact, no local or international firm had responded to the tender exercise. Subsequently, the PMO had taken over the case and to make the necessary changes. It was mostly agreed to reduce the cost of the project in this period of economic crisis in order to attract investors.
