Two Ways to Make Conferences Better
The only thing worse than sitting through a useless meeting is suffering through an equally useless and even longer conference. Here are two ways to increase the value of the next conference you host:
  • Tell a unique story. Rather than organizing your conference around a theme and selecting speakers and breakouts to fit, figure out what story the conference can tell. Design the conference so it tells that story from beginning to end. Participants should feel compelled throughout the day, not like they're attending disconnected meetings and keynotes.
  • Involve attendees. Attendees should be more than a captive audience — don't let them just sit there. Ask attendees to participate by reacting, critiquing, serving on a panel, or creating a discussion group.
