The Cultural Hub Project initiated by Gaëtan Siew, a partner of the architectural firm Lampotang and Siew Architects Ltd located in Port Louis, is targetted at improving the condition of the capital to make it a place of cultural reference and tourist attraction.
The area identified by the initiators of this project includes the central post office, highway, immigration station, ancient buildings and buildings from the colonial era, among others. “The goal is to use old stones to give Port Louis a second life,” said Siew, adding that at the same time they plan to maintain the uniqueness of the capital.
Siew has designed the Cultural Hub Project on principles such as transforming Port Louis into a city of cultural exchange, city of arts and peace and also keeping in mind economic sustainability.
This project will need the collaboration of Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund, since the area is a world heritage site. Siew said that the Aapravasi Ghat is the anchor of the project. “There will also be green spaces dedicated to artists,” said Siew. The old building which currently accommodates the post office, will be turned into a museum.
