The Draft Action Plan for Energy 2011/2025 will be discussed at a workshop tomorrow organised by the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities.
The objective is to enable 90 participants from various ministries, parastatal bodies, academic institutions, NGOs and the private sector to analyse and make concrete proposals to refine the plan of action before it is submitted to the European Union at the end of this month.
Several presentations will be made by executives of the ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, the National Development Unit and the Central Electricity Board.
The Action Plan for Energy is part of the Long Term Energy Strategy 2009-2025. It has been updated by executives from various ministries and institutions.
A team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, MID Steering Committee, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Joint Economic Council and the University of Mauritius has been set up.
The action plan is one of the conditions the European Union requires for the disbursement of the second fixed tranche of about €36 million (Rs1.4 billion) as an accompanying measure under the sugar reform.
The Draft Action Plan for Energy 2011/2025 will be available on the website of the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities so that interested parties can make their views and comments.
The document will then be finalised in the light of the recommendations of the workshop and comments from interested parties. It will eventually be submitted to the government for endorsement before being forwarded to the European Union.
