Feasibility Study: Wheat Crop on Large Scale Soon

After conclusive experimental data wheat crop in Mauritius done in 2012, the Mauritius Research Council (MRC) plans to begin immediately the second phase of this project. After powder-d'Or (Orchard Baudot) on land of sugar Compagnie de Saint-Antoine, culture extend to Savannah and White Mountain.

Regions Savannah and Montagne-Blanche after Powder-d'Or, welcome the wheat crop on a large scale. This part of the government's concern for food security, with the satisfactory results of the first crop planting in June 2012. Attending the party bread, Friday and Saturday at Caudan Waterfront, MRC researchers have explained to the public the various stages of production of wheat. Kine Diop and Rishta Gooljar explained that to date, the wheat crop practiced on a small area has yielded positive results. With the second phase of this project, the MRC will attempt to see if "the wheat crop on a large scale shall be conclusive." Among the varieties presented Friday and Saturday: the Ndura, Sky and Stallion.

The different stages of production were presented on this occasion. Remember that wheat, which represents 80% of the usual food consumption of Mauritians is imported to day.

In a second step, the government is trying to find a place in wheat production. After many studies, it was shown that culture is possible in Mauritius. Reduces tests at a few years ago gave positive results.

Research in this area in Mauritius took place at three levels. The first was to assess the culture in different agro-climatic conditions in the island. Second, to establish the variety that gives the best performance. The third, finally, was to assess the quality of wheat flour that can be produced from the locally grown wheat.
