Chagossians Resettlement: London Announced Possible Feasibility Study

The British Foreign Minister, Mark Simmonds, spoke Monday, July 8th, the British Parliament, for London to conduct a feasibility study on a possible relocation of the Chagossians in their native islands. The Chagossians are cautious.

The Foreign Minister, Mark Simmonds, announced that British intention in a statement to the House of Commons, Monday, July 9. It is about meeting as many people as possible: Chagossians settled in Mauritius, Seychelles and the UK.

Mark Simmonds explained that the Chagos islands, uninhabited for 40 years, will require a complete transformation with no infrastructure.

Olivier Bancoult, leader of the Chagos Refugee Group (GRC) is cautious about this statement from London that in the past there have been several announcements unanswered. "Already in 2000, the former minister Robin Cook had committed to a similar study but the consultants of the British government saw the thing from a different angle," he laments.

This time, he just hoped that the views of the Chagossians will actually be taken into account.

The British expelled the inhabitants of the Chagos Archipelago in the 1960s and 1970s for the establishment of the U.S. military base on Diego Garcia.
