On June 18, Mauritius Post Ltd (MPL) officially launched a philatelic exhibition at the Municipal Council of Port Louis.
Twenty one honorary consulates of Mauritius were present at the event. Lord mayor Mamade Khodabaccus, as well as several representatives of MPL, were also present for the exhibition organised under the theme ‘Stamp, a universal ambassador’.
The stamps symbolise the flora and fauna, history, monuments, environment and cultural heritage of the 21 countries.
The lord mayor highlighted the history of Port Louis, which according to him is the heart of the country. Through this exhibition, more avenues of cooperation are likely to open up with other countries.
“It is for the first time that such an event is being organised in the city. We expect to further the image of Mauritius at the international level. Port Louis is currently in the process of signing twinning agreements with countries such as Durban,” said Khodabaccus.
He added that through the twinning project, greater exchange in terms of sports, culture, donations and expertise would take place.
MPL chief executive officer Giandev Moteea, who was also present at the launch, said that the philatelic exhibition would help promote the island in different fields.
“It is a symbolic ceremony whose idea originated in 2009. The theme chosen also matches well with our mutual objective of having greater cooperation with other countries and giving greater visibility to Mauritius,” Moteea said.
The chief executive officer believes that philately can pave the way for better trade and economic relations between countries.
“It is also an excellent medium of communication through which one can share knowledge and the history of different nations,” he said.
Salem Beydoun, Lebanese honorary consul general, also welcomed this initiative.
“We cannot live without our hearts and Mauritius cannot live without Port Louis. Everyone has something to offer to the capital as it has given us a lot,” sad Beydoun
