Taxes: 20,000 Papers Already Submitted Electronically

9 years, 2 months ago - March 23, 2012
The officers of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) will be in 16 centers across the island this weekend between 8 am and 30 16 hours to help taxpayers meet their tax forms electronically.

To date, over 20,000 taxpayers have used e-filing ( Approximately 120,000 taxpayers, who have until April 2 to come into line with the Inland Revenue, are used for this exercise.

"We recognize that everyone can not fulfill their record electronically or use Internet Banking or go to the MRA, in Port-Louis, to make their payment. It is in this context that the MRA will this Saturday 24 and Sunday, March 25 close of a campaign to help taxpayers fill out their form, "says one to the MRA.

This year, two new exemptions come into force.

Indeed, parents who pay their child's tertiary education (only 'undergraduate' and provided the training is full time and is not sponsored) may qualify for an exemption not exceeding Rs 80,000 ( if the student was educated in Mauritius) and Rs 125,000 (if studies are carried out abroad). Those receiving more than Rs 2 million are not eligible for this exemption.

Other exemption: deduction of interest payable on a "secured housing loan" for the purchase or construction of a first home. The exemption does not exceed Rs 120,000 and the taxpayer has a period of five consecutive years. The loan must, however, have been made after 1 July 2006.

In addition, taxpayers with incomes above Rs 2 million must fulfill the 'Solidarity Income Tax' which is about 10% of the dividends and interest. Those who sold or transferred any property between 1 January 2011 to November 4, 2011 for the sum of over Rs 2 million will have to pay a tax of 10%. Those who are in their first sale whose earnings do not exceed Rs 5 million are exempt from this tax. These two measures will no longer be in force next year.

It is also important to note that taxpayers who do not submit their tax forms will be charged a 5% penalty on the amount of tax plus 1 % interest each month.
