It wears a 5% contribution of hydropower in total electricity production in Mauritius. This project is at a cost of Rs 45 million and aims to produce 1.8 million units of electricity per year. Other sites will, subsequently identified for similar projects.
Past five years, electricity demand grew by 3.2%, from 367 MW in 2007 to 430 MW in 2012. Although production has also increased by 2.6% during this period, the situation may be complicated to 2014. Already, a 'peak; consumption of 430 MW was recorded in February 2012.
Also in 2012, the commercial sector remains the largest consumer of electricity, accounting for 36% of demand. The residential sector follows with 32%, followed by the industrial sector 30%. About 2% of the demand will various activities.
