The Urban Xtreme Skate Park was opened with great fanfare last Saturday. Covering an area of 400 square meters, the recreation area offers skateboarding, street basketball, rollerblading, BMX, free running (Parkour) and trampoline. All these activities take place on a circuit bitumen. A first in Mauritius.
In Europe, according to Melody Tuson, director of Skate Park, extreme sports is a booming industry. The main objective is to develop the extreme sport in Mauritius and create a demand for this type of activity. "These sports are offered as a means of expression and entertainment to young people, especially those people north of the island. By introducing this new way, we can even witness the birth of great local athletes, "she says.
Parkour is an activity that is gaining popularity worldwide. "Also called the 'free running', Parkour is a way to move from one point to another with fast and fluid movements, jumps and over obstacles. This is a very physical sport requiring agility and balance, "says our interlocutor.
For Melody Tuson, there is no age limit for practicing extreme sports: "Just simply love the game."
