The Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES) seriously considering launching its course Higher School Certificate (HSC) Professional. The concept is not only the academic side, but also the employability of young people. HSC Professional is an alternative to the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and traditional will be offered over a period of two years.
There are about 10,000 young people who are targeted for this project. The figures show that there are about 12,000 young HSC examinees every year. But only in 2000 opted for a scholarship, while others do not wish to graduate. They prefer to enter the world of work. However, companies would employ young people with experience. Thus, HSC Prof is a solution to this problem, as it offers training courses to acquire the necessary skills.
It meets the needs of the economic situation in Mauritius: fight against the decline among students of School Certificate (SC) and unemployment, encourage lifelong learning, reduce the gap between the lack of qualifications of those who leave school early and those needed to enter the labor market. Students can choose between two combinations of materials. These choices meet the market demand and thus initiate students in courses demand.
Five areas have been identified: information technology, agriculture, administration, marine science and tourism. After a visit of Professor Lucien Finette the Cambridge International Examination (CIE) last month, the MES is currently working on teacher training modules and curriculum HSC Prof. The director assures that the HSC Prof. respect the level imposed. Proofreading is done by the CIE.
