Trade deficit of Rs 66.528 million for 2010

Export and import increased in 2010 compared to 2009.

For 2010, exports of Mauritius amounted to Rs 68.866 million. This represents 11.6% more than in the previous year. Imports amounted to Rs 135, 394 million, representing an increase of 14.3% compared to 2009.

These results in a trade deficit of Rs 66, 528 million reflect an increase of 17.2% compared to 2009. Excluding aircraft worth Rs 2.682 million bought in 2009, the trade deficit rose by 23.0% compared to the previous year.

The analysis of exports shows that Europe remains the main destination for exports from Mauritius. The continent buy about 63.4% of our exports.This represents an amount of Rs 39.319 million. The United Kingdom remains the largest market with 21.8% of total exports. Other major markets for our exports are France (16.7%), USA (10%), Italy (7.1%), Spain (6.5%), South Africa (5.8%) and Madagascar (5.7%). 

Exports of food and live animals for the year 2010 amounted to Rs 20.856 million. This means an increase of 12.2% compared to 2009. Sugar exports have increased by 13.4% while those living primates fell 1.4%.
