The Hindi Speaking Union (HSU) donated books worth Rs 100,000 to Centre de Lecture Publique et d’Animation Culturelle (CELPAC) on Wednesday at the Ministry of Arts and Culture.
The donation was held in the presence of minister Mookhesswur Choonee.
At the function Choonee highlighted the importance of making reading a priority in Mauritian society, which according to him, is losing its values everyday.
“The Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam once stated that we must build an intelligent nation. This can only be done through reading,” said Choonee.
Rajnarain Gutty, president of HSU said that this donation will help encourage a multi-cultural and sharing environment.
“HSU is responsible for promoting Hindi language and culture and by donating books to an organisation we are further propagating Hindi,” said Gutty.
It should be noted that many events are commemorated and celebrated at CELPAC such as Diwali, Christmas, World Bread Day, Eid, abolition of slavery and others.
