Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Dr Rashid Beebeejaun, said that Mauritius was fully committed to attaining the objectives of the action plan for the provision of electricity to some 250 million Africans over the period 2010-2020.
He was addressing participants of the sixth Joint Expert Group Meeting of the Africa-European Union Energy Partnership (AEEP) organised at the initiative of the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, the European Union and the African Union Commission.
The meeting’s main objective was to finalise an action plan which will deal with general concerns about energy security, price fluctuations, increasing demand in energy access and climate change. Around 80 participants from some 15 countries attended.
“The development of renewable sources of energy,” said Dr Beebeejaun, “is crucial to tackle barriers and obstacles with a view to ensuring a greater penetration of renewable energy in the energy mix.”
Dr Beebeejaun said there is a need for more cooperation among stakeholders in this sector to enhance the use of renewable sources of energy on the continent by sharing technology and experience as well as capacity-building.
