The draft of the Professional Architects Council Bill, prepared by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping has been circulated among architects. The Bill aims at creating a council to register professional architects and to exercise and maintain discipline in the profession.
It approves sanctions against architects including suspension of their operating permits and removing their names from the list of architects for a period of two years in the public interest in case of professional misconduct. The Bill also stipulates that foreign architects may be allowed to operate in Mauritius but will face the same penalties for serious breaches of the profession.
The council will also ensure that the Code of Conduct is being adhered to in the profession. The council will have power to investigate and to take disciplinary action within the profession. The council can investigate any complaint of professional misconduct, malpractice or negligence, fraud or dishonesty, against an architect.
