The largest ever single export consignment of livestock from the port of Mombasa, Kenya consisting of 3000 live animals to Mauritius is currently underway. The bulls weigh between 320 kgs to 350 kgs each.
Tiba Freighters Operations Manager Mwalimu Mbewe said loading of the cattle onto the purposely built livestock carrier vessel, Hereford Express started on Saturday night.
"Exports of livestock took a break owing to increased cases of piracy along the Indian Ocean. We have negotiated for a bigger vessel which has arrived and we are now loading," he said.
The official said the animals were reared in the traditional disease free zones of Taita ranches, Taita Taveta and others in Kwale district.
Also loaded is 20 tonnes of animal feed, which will be used to feed the livestock as the ship sails to Mauritius.
Kenya is the only country in the region which can supply Mauritius with its livestock requirements.
