Hundreds of people regularly visit the meat and fish section of the Port Louis central market. However, the lack of hygiene there is quite obvious.
According to Myrella Palmyre, the councillor of the Municipality of Port Louis, the situation has been the same for a long time but measures are being taken to improve it. She added that a tender exercise will soon be launched and promoters who would like to improve the state should submit their plan to the townhall. Accordingly, certain criteria will be set up by the municipality to make the area more hygienic for the consumers.
Palmyre said a site visit was organised recently. She added that area was unfit for selling fresh meat as it attracted flies and other insects which could contaminate the meat. This could have severe consequences for people who consume these meat products.
She added that the Ministry of Health and Quality Life had recorded complaints at the municipality that the chicken and other fresh meat are sold in one place without any respect to the sanitary conditions.
She added that though the vendors use medicines to eliminate these insects, it is impossible to make sure that it is completely healthy.
The councillor said that the section that sells fish was even worse as when there is heavy rainfall and makes the area dirty.
