In a press meet at the headquarters of Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temple Federation (MSDTF) on Saturday, Somduth Dulthumun announced the construction of Shobhit University on the island.

He said that this was an investment worth Rs 120 million and that the campus will be constructed in two phases. Each phase will cost Rs 60 million.

The university’s chancellor Dr Shobhit Kumar and pro-chancellor Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra were present at the press meet.

The representatives of the university were part of the Indian President’s delegation during her state visit to the island. While being part of the contingent, they were also looking for a local partner, which they found in the MSDTF. Shobhit University will be constructed on a five-acre plot that has been allocated to the MSDTF by the government.

Shobhit University will also offer scholarships worth Rs 10 million to local students who will be selected by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). The university will mainly focus on research studies in fields such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology.

According to the pro-chancellor, they chose Mauritius because of its good relationship with India.

During a meeting with the minister of Tertiary Education, Dr Rajesh Jeetah, he also said that he appreciated the Mauritian government’s enthusiasm in the field of education.

Vijendra added that his compatriots are on the island in order to provide support in the tertiary sector.
