The Neotown project at Les Salines is not the only one to be set up in the harbour area without an offer.
According to a document that was submitted by Abu Kasenally in Parliament, there are 13 private companies that have benefited from these privileges from 2000 to 2005.
Along with these companies, one department of customs, one parastatal organisation and two ministries have also benefitted.
Among the promoters of the private sector that have benefited from the lands of Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA) are Groupe Roland Maurel for industrial
alcohol stock, Holcim (Mauritius) for the creation of an access road, Chantier Naval de L’Océan-Indien for the construction and repair of ships, Ireland Blyth Ltd for its aquarium project, Le Froid des Mascareignes for the construction of offices among others.
Also, the Mauritius Freeport Development Ltd obtained a land grant for the setting up of a quay to unload fish.
The Ministry of Finance allocated a piece of land to the MPA to construct customs facilities.
The project to rent the grounds of the MPA goes back to 2002 when South African consultant Vorster Architects produced a main line for the development of the harbour area.
