A report on the list of 60 commodities was presented. These comprised mainly frequently purchased products as well as a number of local products.
The prices were analysed and compared in different districts including Port Louis, Pamplemousses, Riviere du Rempart, Flacq, Grand Port, Savanne, Plaines Wilhems, Moka and Black River.
It should be highlighted that the Price Observatory’s main objective is to create a competitive environment in the country.
On the occasion, Harish Bundhoo, chairman of the Price Observatory, highlighted that in the last three months there has been a decrease in the price of products they published, such as butter and corned beef.
It should be noted that the average cost for 60 products as per the above mentioned districts has decreased by 0.7 per cent between May and June this year and by 0.2 per cent between June and July.
Bundhoo added that the body was also taking into consideration the quality of the products.
Ignace Lam Thuon Mine, director of Ebene Way, said that the observatory is a tool to stimulate competition among traders.
“When the observatory was first set up, most traders were not taking it seriously,” he said.
“However, after the results were published, they are trying to bring down the price of many products as no one likes to see their supermarket being ranked last,” he said.
It should be highlighted that on July 29, charts of the report will be available in several public places across the island to inform the general public about the price list
