Mauritius to Increase Refined Sugar Sales to Europe on Demand

Mauritius will boost exports of refined white and specialty sugars to Europe on increased demand, said the head of the body that trades the sweetener.

The country will probably increase exports of refined white sugar by 10,000 metric tons for crop year 2011, Mauritius Sugar Syndicate Chief Executive Officer Jean Noel Humbert said yesterday in a phone interview from Port Louis, the capital. The country has a six-year contract to 2015 to sell refined sugar to Sudzucker AG of Germany, he said.

Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation of 1.3 million people, is one of Africa’s largest sugar exporters to Europe, according to Humbert. Production for the 2011 crop year, which runs from July to June, is forecast at about 410,000 tons, the Chamber of Agriculture said on Nov. 15. Refined sugar output last year was 256,267 tons.

Sales of specialty sugars, which include the demerara and muscovado varieties, will probably increase to 120,000 tons from 110,000 tons a year earlier, Humbert said. “We are responding to demand.”

Omnicane Ltd. (SAVA) and Flacq United Estates Ltd. (FUEL) own and run the country’s two refineries, with a combined capacity of 375,000 tons a year. Harel Freres Ltd. (HFRERES) is the largest producer of specialty sugars, data from the syndicate shows.
