Airport: Negotiations to Relocate Twenty Families
Airports of Mauritius Ltd (AML) has entered into negotiations with a score of families living near Plaisance airport to proceed with the acquisition of their lands to ChatGaon.

The goal: to improve security around Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport as part of the modernization and expansion of the airport of Plaisance.

An offer to buy this land has already been proposed for these families to be resettled elsewhere. The land they occupy is an area of 1.6 acre. They will form a buffer zone to protect residents of the area of airport noise. The acquisition of the land follows the fallout of a master plan on development and development of airport of Plaisance.

Offers to purchase land based on market value have been formally proposed to the landowners concerned since last year. They had until Monday to respond to the request of AML. Subsequently, the Board of AML will address the responses of local residents before starting negotiations with them.

Urgent need to relocate people

The expansion of the airport have raised a lot of gnashing of teeth from the local residents, so it is now urgent to relocate these people in another place, especially since some complain about the loud noise caused by the expansion.

The expansion of the Plaisance airport aims to improve all the facilities needed to accommodate at least one million visitors in 2012. When asked by Le Matinal, Tuesday, a senior AML said it is in the interests of these people to leave these places, because the noise from jet engines will make their lives unbearable. "We asked an independent appraiser to estimate the value of the land prior to the bid. We are open to dialogue with the residents concerned, "he argued.

However, local residents want the offer to purchase their properties takes into account the renovations to the interior of their homes. "I have a lot invested in the construction and interior renovations of my house. That is why I wish there was a reasonable bid, "said Sanjiv Nowluck, a resident of the locality. He also wants individual negotiations are held between AML and every family affected by the eviction. He said it is necessary that this bid is fairly consistent for a family to first purchase a plot of land and then build a house, he said.
