Bhojpuri Language Fares Well In Schools
Bhojpuri language is being taught as an oral component in Standard I since the beginning of semester one of 2012. This is a new initiative to promote the diversity of Mauritian cultures.

Arvin Bissessur who chairs the technical committee at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute said, “The teaching of Bhojpuri is going very well in the schools. The inspectors of the Ministry have been following the teachers and the pace at which the students are adapting to the new language.” He explained that because the subject is only being taught as an oral component, there were no written tests.

He says, “The technical committee at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute has sent common Bhojpuri songs to all the schools on Independence Day for the students to sing. The students were graded on the performance of these songs.”

He says the standard I students will start the written component of the subject when school resumes on April 23.

He highlighted that, “Bhojpuri was introduced as part of the Bridging The Gap programme which aims to introduce the language with songs. For the pupils all the languages have the same level of difficulty as the novelty of being introduced to a new language is the same. So, the teachers do not face any more difficulty to introduce Bhojpuri.”
