Simulation Exercise: Somali Pirates in Mauritius
The police force organized a simulation exercise with the help of the French navy and foreign experts to assess its ability to accommodate Somali pirates captured by international forces Saturday, April 14.The exercise is expected to last three hours.

Mauritius is ready to try Somali pirates? It is Saturday, April 14, nine months to the day after an agreement signed with the European Union, the police force will test all its logistics for the receipt of such prisoners, arrested by International.

The harbor of Port-Louis, ten Somalis are supported by elite units such as the Task Force of the Mauritius Police (GIPM) and the Special Supporting Unit (SSU) before being detained in Prison Petit Verger, Pointe aux Sables.

France will collaborate in this exercise scale simulation by sending in Port Louis, the frigate Nivose, based in Reunion. The warship engaged in the mission Atalanta was also with us earlier this year for a presentation of French action in the fight against piracy.

Ten false pirates will be presented by the commander of the frigate to the Mauritius Police before they are taken to the offices of the Central CID for questioning. Experts from South Africa, England and Australia have already begun to make the trip to the island to ensure that everything goes according to established protocol.

The Special Cell of the Central CID has already been appointed to investigate cases of piracy. After training the Seychelles, Sergeant Narain, assigned to that cell, will be the main coordinator of ongoing investigations on Mauritian soil.

The pirates will be held in a special wing in the prison of Petit Verger, Pointe-aux-Sables, which will be built soon with funding from the European Union. Maurice will have five days to decide whether to prosecute pirates once they are captured by international forces.

Initially, Port Louis judge has up to 20 pirates. The figure will double after infrastructure work at the Central Prison, in Beau-Bassin. The Merchant Shipping Act has been amended to this effect while the Piracy and Maritime Violence Act was passed in 2011 for such trials.
