The government of Mauritius is to bring the financial services sector to the economic powerhouse of Southern Africa, Kenya. Indeed, Xavier Luc Duval, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance conducted with Njer Jithae Robinson, his Kenyan counterpart, the signing Monday, May 7, 2012, two conventions which mark a turning point in trade between these two countries.
The first provides for the elimination of double taxation regime commonly known as the Double Taxation Agreement Treaty between the two countries. The second is a commitment to the promotion and protection of investments in both countries.
This comes at a time when, despite the long friendship that characterizes relations between India and Mauritius, India is determined to review the provisions of Double Taxation Agreement Treaty it signed with Mauritius, there is a little over 20 years.
While the opportunities are less obvious and less developed than those of India, is the fourteenth contract for the removal of system of double taxation with an African country.
These countries are Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The country is negotiating a new agreement with South Africa. A document from the Ministry of Finance said that Zambia and the Republic of Congo await the ratification of the agreement already signed. The country has negotiated with Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa and is waiting for the signing ceremony. It is negotiating with Algeria, Burkina Faso, Malawi, Tanzania and Yemen.
Mauritius signed an agreement for the promotion and mutual protection of investment with five countries, including Burundi and Africa South.
Xavier-Luc Duval, slammed those who make us believe that the economy is in a compromising situation. He said that the future is Africa and that the government is stepping up initiatives for Mauritius as a financial services center of international reputation plays a major role in developing a primer on the dark continent.
Robinson Njer Jithae said that the signing of this agreement was a step essential for the Kenyan government. " For now, trade is in favor of Mauritius. However, we hope to reverse this trend. Maurice will be useful in areas where its expertise has been proven . "
