The Indian Food Mela will be held on May 26 from 11 am to 6 pm at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture in Phoenix. The Prime Minister’s wife, Veena Ramgoolam, will be the chief guest at the event.
The IWA is traditionally chaired by the Indian high commissioner’s wife.
Deepa Seetharam, president of the IWA, said: “The food mela is now being organised every year and to make it a success we need more and more participants. Therefore we are making an appeal to those who are interested to come forward.”
She added, “The entire fund raised at the mela will go for charitable organisations working for the welfare of children and women. We are also providing scholarships to these children for their studies in India.”
She added that the event takes place on the eve of mothers’ day, so it is an occasion for families to come together.
IWA secretary Poonam Vij said, “A lucky draw will be made every hour and prizes offered.”
“We are working towards bringing a good show for families to enjoy. It is a pre-mother’s day treat. There will be games for kids and different kinds of Indian teas too.”
