The project was presented last week to the minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, Dr Rajesh Jeetah who highly commended the idea.
The establishment of STEP will create an ecosystem for entrepreneurship by integrating activities pertaining to the development of entrepreneurial skills in the population, especially the technically qualified persons. “We want to inculcate a culture of entrepreneurship among our youths as it is a new niche which needs to be exploited” he said.
STEP will also provide skills development to fulfil the need of knowledge industries, help in the creation of an appropriate institutional mechanism for techno-entrepreneurship and technology business incubation and facilities for soft landing of foreign companies into Mauritius.
“The JSS Academy suggested this project and my ministry is willing to provide all the necessary facilities to realise the implementation as soon as possible. JSS Academy has the know-how and we should make maximum use of it to develop the entrepreneur sector for our young people,” highlighted the minister.
Dr Jeetah added, “Silicon Valley or Bangalore was not built in one day. These places have been developed after a lot of hard work and small projects undertaken by youths who are now millionaires”.
STEP also aims at creating the necessary synergy among academic institutions, industries, government departments and financial institutions to form new businesses and convert some of the technically qualified graduates into entrepreneurs and job generators rather than job seekers.
