The project was initiated to determine the feasibility of cultivating high value seaweed in Mauritian seas and processing it for commercial purposes.
Experimental seaweed farming was established in Albion and Vieux Grant Port in Mauritius and at Petite Butte and Jean Tac in Rodrigues, and the seaweed growth has been satisfactory.
“The results have been very promising. However, our research does not end here. We must now double our efforts. The pilot commercial farm of seaweed will help us in this endeavour,” said the executive director of MRC Arjoon Sudhoo to The Independent.
