Southern Africa Initiative of German Business (SAFRI), through its Student Experience Program (STEP) since 2011 allows young people from the countries of the Development Community (SADC) to spend six months in a German company with the possibility of a career. In association with Mercedes-Benz South Africa, it offers new graduates each year internship at Daimler and other companies in Germany.
Mauritian institutions encourage students with training in various fields - engineering, controlling, logistics, sales and marketing, business and information technology - to apply to benefit from the experience overseas. Our students have the opportunity to gain practical experience working in a German company. This international experience, which begins this month for the five selected Mauritians, also includes a cultural program and training companies. German language training before and during the internship is, moreover, an integral part of the program.
Trade, says it is developing increasingly in Southern Africa, and there is a growing need for qualified management personnel and trained. STEP is so focused on preparing young people for the future of SADC countries in terms of professional challenges.
The experience of economic life and the German language, added to an overview of the culture of the host country also aims to establish business contacts between Germany and South Africa.
STEP trainees, says the University of Mauritius, are highly valued by employers for their return. "Their work experience in Germany increases their chances of finding employment in companies in Southern Africa," says one. During this training period, the five Mauritians have the opportunity to meet other young people from African countries. Regarding facilities accompanying this course, airline tickets to and from Germany are paid by the host company. Interns receive a salary sufficient to cover the cost of health insurance, accommodation and other daily needs.
To apply for this program, applicants must be citizens of SADC countries, be recent graduates with experience of not more than one year in the world of work and possess the qualifications required in the above areas. They must also have a good command of English and MS Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint). For next year, the course will be from March to August. Those interested are asked to apply this year.
