The mayor of Port-Louis had strongly protested to the Ministry of the Environment in 1999 against the authorities' plans to cover several major canals of Port-Louis. On October 8, it had served a notice to the Central Tender Board and Ministry of the Environment to stop this project.
"The project was nevertheless maintained with the results that we all deplore today," regrets the Lord Mayor, Aslam Hossenally that replicates the same time the Minister of Public Infrastructure Anil Bachoo. The latter criticized, Tuesday, April 9, at the Assembly, the mayor of Port-Louis, after the deadly floods of March 30 in the capital.
For the mayor, the fault lies primarily with the government. "formal than I who made ??these works bear a heavy responsibility for what happened on March 30," Aslam insists Hossenally. The Lord Mayor and technicians of the municipality of Port-Louis has made ??further visits, Tuesday, April 9, at several sites in the city severely affected by the floods.
"What we've seen is incredible. Not only has the government covered channels, but it did place stilts in the middle of these channels. Which greatly restricts the normal flow of water that day. I wonder how we are going to do about it now. They are clogged. To get there you have to walk on all fours, " criticizes the Lord Mayor.
Workers of the Road Development Authority smashed, again, last night, Volcy Pougnet Street, openings to permit the flow of water from the floor in the canal along this street. The passages were so small they were mostly clogged.
