Since 2003, according to the trend, mobile phones exceeds largely fixed telephony with a higher number of subscribers and call volumes more consistent. While the mobile phone records from year to year growth, the reverse is true for fixed telephony. The number of mobile phone users increased by 14.8% last year, from 1,294,100 in 2011 to 1,485,800. This represents a 12.4% hause for prepaid and postpaid to 43.4%.The mobidensité or the number of mobile phones per 100 inhabitants, has increased by 14.4% from 100.4 to 114.9. Note that the face of increased demand for cellular subscribers and ancitiper future needs, the authorities review the current numbering by adding one more digit. Indeed, from 1 September 2013, the number 5 precede all numbers operating on a mobile network.
Statistics Mauritius The report shows that between 2011 and 2012, local calls made from mobile phones increased by 4 4% ($ 1.4 billion to nearly $ 1.5 billion) in number and 9.3% by volume (2000 to 2200 million). In contrast, the number of users of fixed telephone lines decreased by 6.8% from 374,600 to 349,100 in late 2011 to late 2012. Between 2011 and 2012, calls made from a landline declined 5.3% from 422 million calls in 2011 to 400 million in 2012. Call volume has also decreased by 7.1% (from 981 million to 911 million. The volume of international calls has meanwhile declined to 17.7% of outgoing calls and incoming calls by 11.1 %.
If 80% of local calls in 2012 were made from a cell phone, they were of shorter duration, 1.5 minutes on average, against 2.3 minutes for a call from ' a landline phone. Moreover, the number of SMS sent in 2012 decreased 9.8% compared to 2011, with some 1.15 billion SMS exchanged.
Improved quality of internet service
The report by Statistics Mauritius is an improvement in the quality of internet service, made possible by the international bandwidth. Inbound and outbound capacity increased by 42.5%, from 5.8 Mbps to 8.27 Mbps. The capacity of the bandwidth (for incoming and outgoing traffic) per capita increased by 42% (from 4.5 Mbps to 6.4 Mbps).
Figures also reveal that the number of subscriptions to the Internet has increased in 2012 by 53.8% (from 370 000 to 568 900) with an increase of 77.2% for mobile internet subscriptions and 12.2% for fixed Internet subscriptions.
The Continuous Multi-Purpose Household Survey indicates that during the years 2010 to 2012, access to technology in Mauritian homes has improved including 44.9% of homes with a computer and 39.2% enjoying access to the internet
Slight decline in employment (-1.1%)
the level of economic performance, official statistics show that employment in firms employing more than 10 people, has experienced a slight decline of 1.1% in 2012 compared to 2011 with 12,972 people employed in the sector (7068 men and 5904 women) against a higher number in the previous year: 13,116. The ICT sector and absorbs a percentage of 4.3% of total employment in Mauritius. The number of companies was 136 in 2012, one less than in 2011 (137.)
The current price value added generated by the ICT sector is Rs 19.4 billion or 6.1 % more than in 2011 (Rs 18.3 md) and its share in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), representing 6.4%, unchanged from 2011. We also note a slight decline in real growth in the sector, from 9.4% in 2011 to 9.1% in 2012.
