MRA: More than Rs 200 Million Recovered from Riders

The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) continues to tighten the screws to the riders. With the commissioning of a Rescue Management Unit two years ago and a Risk Management Unit recently led services helped to recover more than Rs 200 million from 8000 "small" fraudsters.

Both units were necessary in tracking small traders and other street vendors who amassed a small fortune without accountability to the tax authorities. The officers who are up and field surveys also collect and given to the Registrar General for the automotive and real estate acquisitions designated persons, rentals they receive, the frequency of their trips abroad and the amount their banking interests, among others.

All this information is then entered into a computer to compare variations to determine the exact targeted income people. In fraud cases, the culprits are invited to pay their taxes in a specified time. This system was extended to the "big" fish and fishing should be pretty good when the nets are drawn.

These details should be revealed this morning by Sudhamo Lol at the launch of a MRA Week as part of the celebration of the seven-year history of the organization. It is moving forward with a program to raise awareness among college students in order to promote the culture of tax.

"We want to explain to young people that as future employees, it is a national duty to pay the tax. So that the old can receive their pensions and development projects can be started, "said the Director General of the MRA.

As it is its new services, MRA will launch an internet service within three months so that each Mauritian can check at any time how much he owes the IRS. On the other hand, today, Customs will launch an SMS service that will allow shipbrokers to know accurately the movement of containers in their responsibilities. So they will not have to stick together to the customs offices for these details.

Value date, MRA has raised Rs 5.3 billion Income Tax for the year. The amnesty of the MRA for the riders program has borne fruit: it has allowed the MRA to bring a whopping Rs 750 million for the same period.
