At a time when the purchasing power is declining, canned tuna, cheap, is increasingly popular in kitchens.

Traders, themselves, are rubbing their hands and inflate their stock, with either local or imported products, for a beautiful first Rafl share of sales. In supermarket chains or in small corner shops, a wide choice of brands benefits both to consumers. Canned tuna is imported from several countries around the world: the Indian Ocean region and Africa (Seychelles, Ghana, South Africa), the old continent (France, Spain) or Asia (Thailand, Philippines).

According to statistics from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Mauritius, about 250 tonnes of canned tuna, with a market value of Rs 33 million were imported in 2012, double the imports of the year previous, amounting to only about 105 tons. For the first quarter of 2013, some 12 tons of canned tuna (imported) are powering local businesses. New brands have yet appeared on the market.  "But Tropical local labels or Princes present in commercial rays do not give up their market share. Mascareigneset Princes Tuna Tuna are the two major manufacturers of canned tuna in Mauritius and they feed BrandActiv which markets both local brands across the island, "said Ian Lafrance, Brand Coordinator of BrandActiv (filialed'IBL). He adds that for the year 2012, more than 1000 tonnes of tuna into pieces, whole or fillet, were locally produced fuel sales. "BrandActiv relies heavily on the quality and accessibility of its products while providing a wide range of canned tuna for the well-being of its consumers." 

The price of canned tuna, however, been an increase of approximately 3% last month. That said, the product is very popular. "We record sales for this excellent article. Moreover, canned tuna in general is a well established product in the Mauritian culture, "adds Pascal Crown, Category Manager Winner's. Ready to use, the product has a strong popular among housewives. "The tuna nice and well boîteest product that helps you out in unexpected, including a visit surprised'un relative or friend," said Ginette Laroche, domestic service and catering. This product uses "nature" or compliments a variety of small dishes "well Mauritian" as a spicy salad.

For, however, raise their competitiveness, competing brands are revealed in the choice of high added value, including recipes concocted carefully preserved: Mexican salad tuna nicoise salad, tuna curry, mustard tuna, tuna steam all kinds of flavors ... to refine the palate.  

FINE FLESH AND DELICIOUS 

And if prices respond to small grants - averaging at Rs 30-Rs 50 per box of 160 g and 200 g - we also find offers more refined. Even the local brand Tropical aligns on this front. Renowned for its tasty flesh and fine, white albacore tuna, for example, a food of choice in the preparation of salads. This explains why sometimes the high prices of some labels that put this type of canned tuna. Otherwise, for Tropical or Princes brands ranging from chunks in brine tuna fi let the chili and garlic, prices play between Rs 40 and Rs 65 a box that comes between 120 g and 185 g.

However, the biggest competitive pressure comes from Thai products, box of about 175 g is sometimes available within Rs 30. But on average, canned tuna costs Rs 250 to Rs 300 per kg.
