Unusual Presence Of Bats In the Capital

Bats were observed in several areas of the capital in the morning today at the amazement of many people visiting their workplaces.

The particularity of this flying mammal is, as we know, to feed at night. It basically consumes insects and fruit. In Mauritius, it is especially lychees and mangoes , which have become their favorite fruits . However, at this time of year , mangoes are still green and litchi season has not started yet.
According to experts in the field , this is the search for food growing bats to leave their usual landmarks to look for food at all costs . They are currently the green mangoes that are the object of their lust .Some people attribute these impromptu flights of bats to overcrowding and wind.
These mammals endemic to Mauritius are protected and it is illegal to kill them.At the Ministry of Agriculture is to understand that the actions were initiated to control the population of local bat. Some think it is time that the Department of Agriculture grants an exemption to a ban dating from 1960 .Moreover, it seems that the lack of food also affects birds and monkeys who currently tend to leave the forest to look for food elsewhere.
