Arrested Thursday, December 5 , in the context of the Harte case then paroled, lawyer Ravi Rutnah appeared in court in Port Louis this afternoon. Two charges were brought against him: "False and malicious denunciation" and "conspiracy." He got parole and will however provide a deposit of Rs 30,000. He could not do so, for now, because the court case was closed.
His lawyers, Steve Obeegadoo and Anoup Goodary, wanted to know who filed the complaint against Ravi Rutnah. And, according to Mr. Anoup Goodary the police had told them that this is John McAreavey himself has approached the authorities. Lawyers, so, said they are not aware of such a statement.
Anyway, Ravi Rutnah is accused of conspiring with his colleagues Rama Valayden and Sanjeev Teeluckdharry to pervert the course of justice took place while the trial of the murder of Michaela Harte Irish tourist in 2012. The police also accused of having made a statement regarding the CCTV footage of the former Legends, staying where the Irish and her husband. The lawyer had argued that the two people who appeared on the pictures and had an altercation at the reception were John and Michaela McAreavey. That was not true.
The prosecution objected that Ravi Rutnah leave the country, saying he holds a British passport. Besides, he had to fly today. His lawyers have challenged this "objection to departure" in court Monday.
