Bunkering: Goal 15 000 Vessels in 2014
The main objective is to allow oil companies operating in Mauritius and engaged in trade fuels to offer more competitive prices for bunker fuel, allowing Port Louis to position itself as a great port over to other competitors and make the port a mainstay of the economy. Some 15 000 vessels are targeted first.
To date, it is the State Trading Corporation (STC), which manages the trade. Revenues collected in 2012 amounted to Rs 250 M. However, 35,000 vessels listed in the region, only 1,200 of them came to supply fuel to Port-Louis last year.
Singapore realized, in 2012, record sales of fuel for ships (43.5 million tonnes).
A STC is said to be unable to exploit this lucrative activity, lack of storage means. "The investment required for the construction of storage facilities are too high. This explains the government's decision to open the way for private operators, "said an officer working on the case.
Oil companies operating in Mauritius, a new operator, Beta Oil Terminal Ltd, has embarked on this project.
It has taken the necessary steps for the construction of three storage tanks of fuel. The total storage capacity will be 13,000 cubic meters. The project cost is estimated at Rs 400 million.
