" Public beaches are meant for the full enjoyment of the public at large and cannot be used for the holding of private activities," it informs in a statement Monday.
Lately, private activities, in fact, been organized on the most beautiful public beaches. Operators take ownership of large spaces and chairs are installed. This phenomenon is growing in spite of existing regulations.
According to the Beach Authority Regulations Act 2004, any person who contravenes the regulations, fails to comply with the conditions of an authorization granted to a notice of violation or order made by a licensed / a police officer commits an offense .
Upon conviction, the person is liable to a fine not exceeding Rs 10,000 and imprisonment not exceeding one year.
In addition, the law allows an officer or a police officer, at any time, to deliver a notice of violation to a person when he is satisfied that the conditions imposed in the authorization are not met.
A notice of contravention must not be an obstacle to a prosecution for an offense in respect of which the notice was served.
The Ministry of Lands and Housing has asked the public to report all private events held on public beaches on 468 1437.
