In a bid to show its commitment towards the preservation of flora and fauna of Mauritius, it has decided to release some Rs 10 million from the Conservation Fund to help the Valley d’Osterlog Endemic Garden.
This money will be used to construct basic facilities and amenities. “This will allow it to start generating revenue and become self-financing,” said the minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security. Satish Faugoo.
Over Rs 16 million from the National Parks and Conservation Fund of the Ministry of Agro-Industry has been allocated to Vally D’Osterlog in the past. However, this has not been enough.
“The Valley D’Osterlog Endemic Garden really needs to set up some basic amenities to operate in an effective manner. In this context, funds for capital costs were applied for from the Maurice Ile Durable Fund in March 2010,” said Faugoo. He added that the MID Fund recommended an allocation of Rs 50 million for the capital projects.
“Unfortunately, this fund was not released by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and consequently no capital works could be undertaken,” he stated.
He pointed out that the operating expenses were then being met from the National Parks and Conservation Fund.
“Given that this fund is now almost depleted a request was again made in 2010 to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development for funds to be made available in the budget so as to enable the foundation to meet its recurrent expenses. These requests were again unfortunately turned down,” he said.
The minister highlighted that they have now decided to release Rs 10 million.
