The State Trading Corporation (STC) can heave a sigh of relief. In its analysis report, the Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) has noted that it did not detect any contamination in petroleum products from Mangalore Oil Refinery.

These products were on board the tanker Red Eagle belonging to Betamax. Fears of contamination and explosion expressed by the Opposition have been dispelled. The vessel docked in on Friday with 57,300 metric tonnes of fuel worth $53 million carrying seven different petroleum products.

It is the first time that such a large oil shipment has arrived in the country aboard a single tanker. There was a controversy during the week when it was on its way to Port Louis.

It was on Saturday that the unloading exercise started after SGS submitted its assessment report to STC.

The company responsible for the importation of fuel underlined that no contamination was detected. Megh Pillay, STC director general was on site early to personally monitor the various procedures required.

The Opposition, MMM, is still talking about the risks associated with this mode of transportation including the white and black petroleum products in the same tanker and especially at the same time.

“Given its weight, the heavy oil must be stored at a temperature above 160º C. It involves risks of contamination and explosion if ever there is contact with other products on board,” said MP Reza Uteem. Howeve, according to STC, the heavy oil is transported at of about 50ºC and not 160ºC.
