New Legislation To Control Sale Of Drugs

The Minister of Health, Lormus Bundhoo, announces the completion of the new Pharmacy Act. This law, once passed, would help to better manage the pharmaceutical sector, whether in the public or private domain.

The Mauritian population consumes approximately Rs 3.6 billion for drugs annually. The public health institutions spend Rs 600 million in medicines, which corresponds to approximately seven million orders `. The remainder represents the number of drugs purchased in private pharmacies.

Maurice has 275 pharmacies and 30 retail pharmacies wholesalers. C'' is one of the reasons that led the department to revise laws: "With the growing number of drug dealers, it is imperative to ensure that they are in compliance with the laws," said the minister. A private pharmacies that are already controlled by the Pharmacy Board, established by the Pharmacy Act.

Lormus Bundhoo also announced the creation of an "inspectorate to monitor the retail, wholesale, production and import activities of drugs."
