Lord Mayor of Port Louis Dr Mahmad Khodabaccus has been named new Secretary General of the Parti Mauricien Social Democrate (PMSD). He replaces former attorney general Rama Valayden who is taking an extended break from politics after his defeat at the last general election.

Dr Mahmad Khodabaccus noticed: “The textile sector is going down. Lots of women are losing their jobs. Among the island’s 36,000 unemployed, 23,000 are women. The figure is alarming. Moreover, there are around 6,000 single mothers in Mauritius and the number has not stopped increasing.”

The PMSD is working hard to alleviate this problem and uplift the status of women in Mauritius, said Mr Morvan. The politburo of the PMSD is currently finalising the list of candidates to run in the upcoming municipal elections in the five municipalities.

Four municipal councils are of particular interest to the PMSD – Port Louis, Curepipe, Quatre Bornes and Beau Bassin/Rose Hill. “We encourage more and more women to participate in the forthcoming municipal elections also,” said Mr Morvan.
