The president of the Confédération des Travailleurs du Sekter Privé (CTSP), Reaz Chuttoo stated that the price of household commodities has risen by Rs 552 between January and March this year.
He declared this during a press conference on Tuesday in Port Louis. Chuttoo said that this increase has been noted despite the fact that the government reduced the prices of 125 consumer products.
According to the unionist, the cost of consumer products has been brought down by only Rs 42.
The CTSP conducted a survey where a hundred people were questioned.
“The government should make an effort to relieve the people through subsidy on basic prices,” he said.
Chuttoo appealed to the state to grant a stimulus package to the people. He said there was a lack of willingness on the part of government to do something for the public.
The president also commented on some traders indulging in unfair practices when it comes to products they import. He appealed to the authorities to apply tougher laws.
The CTSP will organise a demonstration on Saturday at Place Margéot, Rose Hill.
