The Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) project, which is in line with the government’s vision of creating an intelligent Mauritius, is heading in the right direction.

The operator who will be allocated the tender of the project will be known by Wednesday. The 10 locations that have already been identified are expected to be equipped with WiFi by mid February next year.

In the first phase of the project, the base transmission stations to provide WiFi service will be installed on the premises of five municipal councils, four district councils and an administrative building in Rodrigues.

This project remains very high on the agenda of the Information and Communication Technology minister, Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum. “Tenders have already been launched and the successful bidder should be known shortly,” he said. The project, which requires an investment of around Rs 5.2 million is being funded by Universal Service Fun under ICT Authority.
