The increase of 10 cents in the price of SMS and MMS, announced by the minister of Finance and Economic Development Xavier Luc-Duval in the 2011-12 budget, will be effective from January 15.

A regular SMS will now cost 70 cents instead of existing 60 cents.

At the cheque donation ceremony held on Thursday in Port Louis, the chief executive officer of Mauritius Telecom (MT), Sarat Lallah stated that necessary measures have been taken and soon a communiqué will be issued to inform the public about this increase.

Lallah added that this increase of 10 cents represents tax. MT will only collect this tax to be handed to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA).

Lallah stated that sending SMS and emails remain a modern means of communication and about 1 million SMSes are sent everyday. He added that for New Year, 10 million SMSes were sent.
